The Importance of Raising Resilient Children
Raising resilient children is important. Especially during these times where school closures and social distancing are not only affecting children’s education but also their social development. So it’s crucial to help them understand and believe that they can overcome any difficult situation- no matter what.
Resiliency in children is also important because, at some point in every child’s life, they will face a challenge or setback that will have to work through. And how they respond to that situation can be determined by how resilient they are.
So encourage your child to work through their setbacks and hardships- don’t let it define them.
How To Help Build Resiliency
It’s important to understand that kids are not born naturally resilient. Instead, over time through practice and intentional lessons, resilience can be learned. According to Anthony James, director of the family science program at Miami University in Ohio, resiliency, “ just happens over time through dynamic parent-child interactions as parents make intentional decisions based on what abilities they desire to see their children exhibit over time.” So try implementing resiliency lessons in your everyday schedules.
